Do you love sharing nature and the wonders of wetlands with others? The Elkhorn Slough Reserve is seeking volunteers to join our outreach and education team, leading trail tours, supporting public events, or engaging with visitors at our interpretive center. We are hosting a Docent Training course January 25th-February 25th, hosted via Zoom Wednesday evenings (5:30-7pm) and in person at the Reserve Saturday mornings (9am-1pm)
This hybrid training course features online presentations paired with weekend field trips led by the Reserve’s scientists, stewards, and educators. You’ll learn about the wildlife, plants, history, and restoration of the Elkhorn Slough, and develop your ability to engage audiences in wildlife explorations. Upon graduation, docents have access to additional field trips, resources, and mentorship opportunities to develop their skills and eventually lead hikes.
Reserve tours are offered on weekends, with individual docents leading an average of 1-2 tours a month. Tours are scheduled based on individuals’ availability but require some weekend availability. Docents also support outreach programs and engage visitors at our center, so if you’re passionate about nature but not long hikes, we would still love to have you!
