Volunteer: Horticulturist/Gardener

Objective: Create and maintain a welcoming and educational green space for students attending Mae C. Johnson Education and Cultural Enrichment Academy.  

 

Duties: 

Determine when corrective action is needed to improve health, vigor and appearance of plants by fertilizing, pruning, transplanting, pest control, etc.   Maintain an accurate and up-to-date record on work performed while ensuring garden is cared for on a consistent schedule  Possible duties include, but are not limited to: raking, weeding, shearing, edging, and hand pruning  Lead and instruct the students in activities to maintain and care for the garden 

Desired/Required Skills: 

Compassion for enriching the lives of underserved students  Excellent verbal communication skills to clearly explain expertise concepts, provide instructions and deliver feedback  Regular and reliable attendance 

 

Required Documents: Volunteer Application, LiveScan background check, TB test

Hours: 2 hour shift during open hours 1pm-6p; 1-2 times per week
