The Monterey State Historic Park Custom House Store raises funds for the Monterey State Historic Park School Programs. All profits go towards covering costs including supplies, transportation, and grants for underfunded schools, as well as the restoration of our historic structures. The Custom House Store is entirely volunteer-run and is our most important year-long fundraising effort! Volunteers operate the park store located inside the Custom House and provide general visitor services. Training is provided for all volunteers. The Custom House Store has volunteer shifts from 10:30 am to 1:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m every Thursday through Sunday, and on the Mondays of holiday weekends. School group program volunteers assist MSHP Staff with hands-on interpretive presentations to 4th grade school classes. These activities introduce children to the tactile reality of Monterey's history and contextualize their lessons. Activities include rope making, tortilla cooking, cartography, leather branding, and playing with historic games and toys. Shifts are from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. or 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays during the School Program seasons.
